Orientation recount

I rocked into Atkin collage on the 11th of November and EVERYONE knew who I was and I knew NOBODY! I made tonnes of new friends in practically the first minute! There are so many so many of them I can’t remember all of them! There’s Anastasia, Sana, Claire, Indiah, Jaquelin, Declan, Angus, Jemma and so many more!

We started of the day in chapel learning a bit about our new school. We were given our first notice about merits and demerits. Then we met the teachers of Dunhellen of 2015. We were then split into our groups. I was in green group. We had Mr.D as our mentor for the day. I was also grouped with Anastasia, Sana, Claire, Jaquelin and Angus.

We had our first 10 minutes in home room. This was our time to ask any questions about the day before it actually started. We had a quick little convocation about ‘I can’t remember what’.

My first lesson was science. We had 3 stations and one of them had something to do with fossils. When the teacher asked us what a fossil was I raised my hand. I started to go into all the details about fossil fuels, the teacher had to stop me before I could finish. During this lesson I got to help my group mates with using microscopes. I learnt to how to use them last year at G-TAC.

After science my group headed over to preforming arts. In preforming arts we had Mrs. Flood. Most the time we played games but it gave me the opportunity to understand her ways of teaching. We played two games. The hat game and Zip, Zap, Zoom.

Next was art. The art rooms were AMAZEBALLS! We were given ink blotches and we had to turn them into something. Mine was a guy with a moustache and a top hat. There were so many amazing materials!

In P.E we played Girls vs Boys dodge ball. Girls won the first round and then we sucked! Even with the teacher on our team we couldn’t win! The teacher did add in a couple twists though.

In survival tips we had some currant year sevens teach us about the Ipads, Merits and Demerits and the school in general. It was a helpful session.

Indonesian we learnt about Indonesia the country and the language. We learnt the numbers up to 20 and then we got to play Indonesian Bingo.

Over all it was a successful day.

Shrine of remembrance

Today ( Wednesday the 3rd of September) The year 5/6s of Moonee Ponds Primary School went to the shrine of remembrance for the battle of Australia commemoration. We  weren’t the only school there, we were joined by other schools such as Aitken Collage, St Patrick’s College Ballarat, Lilydale High School, Pascoe Vale Girls College and many more!

These schools were invited to help the students understand and gain knowledge about the battle for Australia and how regular people like us went to war to fight for the Australia we have today.

This was taught to us through speeches and trough songs like, “Be still my soul.” And “I am, You are, We are Australian.” Thanks to the band:  The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Band.

We were told stories from a solder’s point of view and priers were lead by the Chaplin .

Thank you to everybody who made this excursion happen and I’m sure everyone got something out of the experience.

Term 2 reflection: Chemical change

In term 2 the year 5/6 did their integrated unit on ‘Chemical Change’. So every week 2 scientists from GTAC came into Moonee Ponds Primary school to teach us about changing state, the 4 states of matter and much, much more! I enjoyed this unit very much and I believe I benefited well from it.

3 facts I learnt were:

I learnt many things but here are some of my favorites:

I learnt that the change from a gas to a liquid is called condensation. So say you just had a shower and you didn’t have the fan on so there is a lot of steam in the room. Then the steam hits the mirror and it will go from being hot to being cold. So it will turn into a liquid.

Another thing I learn’t was the interests of gas particles. Gas particles stay a fair way away from each other. They bounce of the walls and of each other when they come into contact with them. When the particles get heated up they move faster and when they get cooled down they move slower.

Another thing I learnt is that a solid can turn into a gas. That change is called sublimation.

2 understandings I now have:

I now understand that it is possible to go from a solid to a gas without going through the step of melting. I understand that that process is called sublimation. I first found sublimation quite weird and didn’t think it was possible but I found a example which explained everything: Dry Ice. Dry Ice does not melt when it is left in the sun, it turns into a gas.

Another understanding I know have is that scientists don’t use all 5 senses in the science lab. In the science lab you look to observe somethings like : color change, size change, shape change, ect. You use your ears to hear bubbling or loud noises or nothing at all. You use hands to feel if something has gone from smooth to rough or vice-verse. And you use your nose to waft of a potion or something similar. You don’t taste anything in case there are dangerous chemicals in it or such.

1 question I still have:

I would like to know if fish would be able to survive on the moon? I would like to know this because I believe there is hydrogen in outer space and in H2O there is Hydrogen and oxygen but we all know fish can’t breathe in oxygen. So I started to wonder weather they would be able to live in outer space and I would like to find out in the future.

What were the most important things I learnt were:

I think the most important things I learnt were the names of the changing state processes.(Melting, Freezing, Evaporation, Condensation and Sublimation) I believe these will help me throughout life so I can explain the changes of state I observe. This will help me in my P.O.E charts so I can have a good explanation at the end.

How did I learn it: 

I learnt them  by listening to the scientists from GTAC explain it to me and to see how they all worked. I found out that when you make pop-corn the kernel evaporates because the inside of the kernel is water. So when the kernel gets hot the water inside starts to boil until finally there is so much gas inside the kernel that it has to pop.

What am I going to do with what I learnt:

I am going to use this information in the future because I dream of becoming a scientist for GTAC. This is a dream because I quite enjoyed our science unit and would like to do more of it in the future.

Read like a reader

Why did Sophie turn into a witch? Why were Sophie and Agatha friends in the first place? Why did Tedros love Agatha? Why did Agatha have no friends?

I want to know where Sophie and Agatha poofed to in the end. Where did they go? That’s what I want to know.

I visualized things obviously the writer didn’t because it was not on the page. She described how Sophie was turning evil but never said it.

Sophie reminded me of me because she has long blonde hair and I have short blonde hair. She is also determent to get what she wants just like me.

I felt sad when Sophie changed. I liked her at the start but she scared me towards the end. I felt happy for Agatha when Tedros asked her to the ball.

I love this book. I never got bored and it was so hard to put it down. It had a bit of everything: fantasy, action, romance, ect. There was lots of spells, boy drama, running scenes and so much more!school for g and e

 

The 5 facts of fiction- the school for good and evil

Fact number #1- Fiction is all about the character.

Sophie, the main character has beautiful long blonde hair. Her skin is so soft and is a peachy colour. Her eyes blue, but not just any blue, sea blue. Her eyes are the colour of the sea. And she wears this beautiful light purple ball gown.

Fact number #2- Fiction is all about what your character wants.

Sophie has waited all her life to be kidnaped and taken to the school for good but when she gets there things don’t go quite to her plan and she finds her at the school for evil. All she wants is to go to the school for good and to have her true love take her to the evers snow ball.

Fact number #3- Fiction is all about how your character gets or does not get what he or she wants.

Sophie gets her prince at first and he always told her he would prove her good in the trial. But when Tedros finds out Sophie is a witch. The she tries to win her prince back but he has a new love interest.

Fact number #4- Fiction is all about how you character changes.

At the end of the book Sophie learns she is a witch. She has vainy skin, Black warts and a bald head.

Education week ‘Scientists do amazing things’

On Wednesday the 21st of May 5/6B had their 1st visit to G-TAC. (Gene technology accesses centre.) We decided to go today to represent education week. The theme was ‘scientist do amazing things’. When we arrived there were many wonderful scientists  ready to teach us about ‘ Changing State’.  We slipped on our lab coats and got ready to work.

Some of the facts I found interesting were that changing from a gas to a liquid is called condensation. I found out that there is water inside a popcorn carnal so that when it is put over heat the water boils and evaporates and that makes the popcorn BURST! Another fact we learned is that water (a liquid) is not always as clean as it seems. We looked at water samples under a stereo ( microscope with 2 lenses) microscope. There were all sorts of bugs in our water.

I now understand that not all bacteria is bad for you, it all depends on where the bacteria is. There is a bacteria in your stomach that helps you digest food and it is good for you there but if we eat it things won’t turn out great. I also understand that there is 5 different ways to change state. These 5 ways are melting, evaporation, condensation, freezing and sublimation.

I still wonder what will happen if liquid nitrogen came in contact with the sun? Will it boil and evaporate? Or will the sun freeze?      G-TAC

G-TAC reflection

It was Tuesday the 6th of May when Moonee Ponds Primary School had their 1st visit from two G-TAC scientists in the science lab. Chris and Maria taught us about how solids and liquids behave differently.

We did lots of different activities to explore how the atoms, molecules and partials worked. The first activity we did, we had to put play dough in a bottomless cup and take it to the other side of the room using tongs! In the 2nd activity we had to take a rubber band to the other side of the room with a cup, but it was not allowed to sit in the cup or on the bottom of the cup and in the 3rd  challenge we had to put most of the partials of a foam cup into a plastic cup and take it to the other side of the room.

Today I learnt about the particles in solids and liquids and how different they are.  I learnt about  why they are tightly packet or how loosely packet. I learnt about how some liquids are stickier than others.

I now understand that the particles in a solid very attracted to each-other and that’s why they are always together. I also understand that the particles in a liquid are still attracted to one anther but there not as fond of each other so they stop shake hands and move on. But in a solid they are with each-other all the time.

I still have 4 questions though. Like if in a rubber band the atoms are tightly packet because it’s a solid but how does it stretch? Is heat a plasma like the sun? do all solids have the same percentage of atoms? How many different types of atoms are there?     DSC_0013

Term 1 reflection 2014

This term the year 5/6 at Moonee ponds primary school studied and learnt about, the 3 levels of government, the road to federation and issues in Australia. With our issues we wrote a letter to whom it concerned, for example I am writing to Mr.G.Hunter (the environment minister) about the rain forest cutting in Tasmania.

3 Things I remember:

 

1.The fact that all of the states in Australia sends many numbers a of representatives an d the territories (Northern territory and Canberra) only send 2 representatives for each house!

2  I found it surprising when I found out that W.A (Western Australia) and Queensland were not always part of the Australian commonwealth. This means that they didn’t have a government and they didn’t follow the same rules as the rest of the country.

3 I found it interesting when I was on my own working on the rain forests in Tasmania. I found out that some of the trees in there are over 5000 years old! This i found very surprising because the minister of Tasmania wants to cut these trees down! 🙁

2 Understandings I now have:

1  I understand that every one (over the age of 18) votes for a minister. That minister has to contribute peoples ideas to parliament. That way everyone gets heard through one voice.

2 I understand that there is a minister for pretty much everything. There’s one for education, environment, health, welfare, ect.

1 Question or Wondering I still have:

1 Are they going to stop the rain forest cutting in Tasmania?

What is the most important thing I learnt?:

1 The most important thing I learnt is that parliament and whose in charge is a big fuss for sum people because they want someone they trust to be in charge and if they don’t get who they voted for, there will be lots of arguments through out the country.

How did I learn it?: 

1 I learnt it through ‘Behind the news’ a program that the year 6’s in my class use for a homework assignment.

What am I going to do with it?:

1 I am going to use it in the future so I can vote for the right person responsibly. 🙂   

Math Mate 6-1

Predict: I predict this will be about the 4 operation.

Read: Jo spent $53 on tulips and orchids. The tulips cost $6 each and the orchids cost $7 each. If she bought 8 flowers in all how many tulips will she buy?

Clarify: nothing to clarify.

My tool: Trial and error

Big question: how many tulips did she buy?

Answer: 2

Summary: This took a lit while and I think this answer is possibly wrong. 🙁

Gilbert’s ghost train reflection

During literature circles I read “Gilbert’s ghost train” by David Metzenthen. If you want to read this book you will need to know the answer to the following questions.

Question 1, What makes this book good? One of the things that were fantastic about this book is Martin Dean’s (One of the main characters) suspicions about Gilbert Cutler. (Another main character in the story). Martin is convinced his 28 year old friend is a ghost. One of the clues Martin has is the fact Gilbert told him he worked on an old steam train. He also said he fought in the war. From the war he brought back an army hat with a bullet hole in it.

Question 2, what would make this book better? I thought the book was a little bit to serious, with Dally Dean (Another main character) having ‘leukaemia’. (A disseise where your white blood cells take over your red blood cells) So over all I thought the book was to over whelming and a little bit to serious.

Question 3, what is one of the most important things the author wants you to know? I think David wants us to know that people die every day. People die for all sorts of reasons. Some people get too old to keep on going; some people get sick like Dally did. Or some people are not happy with their lives and they kill themselves. But people die and David wants us to know it’s a fact of life.

Question 4, why did the writer write this book? Well for this question I think it’s actually asking me this: What is the moral of the story? I think the moral of the story is …. “Things/people don’t last forever, enjoy them while you can.” Martin needed to enjoy Dally while he could. He didn’t have very long to do that though.

Question 5, what does the audience need to know to understand and enjoy this book? Well the audience needs to understand how sick dally is. They need to understand that this poor little probably won’t make it and get better. They also need to understand what life is like for Martin. How he is probably going to lose his brother and that his life is changing so much and that it’s going to be changed for ever and ever.
