Maths Mate problem solving term 2 sheet 1 :)

Predict: I predict this sum will be about addition.

Read: 3?
+?8
=65

Clarify: Nothing to clarify.

Mathematicians tool box: Test all possibilities.

Solve: I figured out that 8+7 equals 15. So I put the 5 down and carried the 1. Then I added 1 and 3 which gave me 4. Then I knew that if you added 2 to 4 you would get 6.

Answer: 37
+28
=65

Box of jelly beans

Predict- I predict it will be about multiplication and division.

Read-   http://www.problempictures.co.uk/examples/op10.htm

Clarify-  Nothing to clarify.

Big questions- How many flavors are in the box?, How many beans are it the box?,  How would you make your own box design.

Mathematicians tool box- Trial and error , guess check and improve, test all possibilities.

Answer- 1. 36 flavors. 2. 126 beans. 3.

Summery- This took Erica and i a while but we got there! 🙂

We got the amount of beans wrong. 🙁

Maths mate :)

math weights

Predict: I predict this will be about weight.

Read: which to weights need to be swapped to balance the scale?

Big question: Which to weights need to swap?

My tool: test all possibility’s, guess check and improve.

Answer: 9 and 5.

Summary: it took me a long time because of all the addition I did; but I got my answer in the end.

math mate :) sheet 7

Predict: I predict this will be about estimation.

Read: Sam has 3 white,3 light blue and 3 dark blue T-shirts in his draw. There was a black out and Sam needed a blue T-shirt. How many T-shirts does Sam need to pull out to defiantly get a blue T-shirt?

Clarify: nothing to clarify.

Big question: how many T-shirts does Sam need to pull out to defiantly get a blue T-shirt?

Mathematicians tool box: guess check and improve.

Solve: well I thought he needed to pull out three shirts but what if they were all white? So I added one to make sure there would defiantly be a blue T-shirts.

Summary: This could be a hard question but with practice it becomes easy.

Math mate

predict: I predict this will be about Roman numerals.

read: move one match so that the equation is correct.

XI+II=III

clarify: nothing to clarify.

Big question: Move one match   so that the equation is correct.

Mathematicians tool box: guess check and improve.

solve: You take the vertical line from the plus signal and add it to what you are taking away, so it looks like this-

XI-III=III

Summery if you know your roman numerals you will be fine

Math mate term 4 sheet 5 :)

Predict: I predict this will be about problem solving + all 4 operations.

Read: Fill in the missing numbers to produce correct equations in every row and column.

Clarify: Nothing to clarify.

Big question: Make sure the answer in every row and column is correct,

Mathematicians tool box: Guess check and improve.

Solve: I started with 8 minus 1 because it was the only question completely written. the answer is 7 so I put 7 in the answer box. Then it says 3 + ? = 7 I know that 3+4 = 7 so I put 4 in the blank box. Then it said ?-1 =1 in knew that 2-1=1 so I put 2 in the blank box. Now it says ?-2=3. I knew 5-2=3 so I put 5 in the blank box. Last it said 5+?=8. I know that 5+3 = 8 so I put 3 in the blank box.

Summery: This question can be time consuming but after a while it gets easier.
